Ingredients

For the apple fries
  • 2 large apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith) Use Granny Smith for a tarter finish; Honeycrisp or Fuji for a sweeter option.
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free all-purpose flour.
  • 1 large egg Can replace with 2 tablespoons aquafaba for egg-free.
  • 2 tablespoons milk Use plant-based milk for vegan variation.
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs Use gluten-free panko for a gluten-free version.
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar Adjust according to sweetness preference.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Can substitute with pumpkin pie spice for a fall flavor.
  • Nonstick cooking spray For air frying.

Method

Preparation
  1. Peel (optional) and cut apples into fry-like sticks about 1/2-inch thick. Pat dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
Coating
  1. Set up three coating stations: Bowl 1 with flour, Bowl 2 with whisked egg and milk, Bowl 3 with panko breadcrumbs mixed with sugar and cinnamon.
  2. Dredge each apple stick in flour, tap off excess, dip into the egg mixture, then coat well with the breadcrumb mixture. Press crumbs onto the apple gently.
Air Frying
  1. Lightly spray coated apple fries with nonstick spray. Place in the air fryer basket in a single layer and do not overcrowd.
  2. Air fry at 380°F (190°C) for 7-9 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through until golden and crispy.
Serving
  1. Enjoy warm with caramel dip, yogurt, or whipped cream.

Notes

Best served warm, can be paired with Dutch-style toppings like caramel sauce, yogurt, or whipped cream. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
