Bread and Cheese Layers
  • 8 slices slices of bread (white or brioche) Use day-old bread for better absorption.
  • 1/2 pound ham, sliced
  • 1/2 pound turkey, sliced You can substitute turkey with chicken.
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded Swap for cheddar or Gruyère for a different flavor.
Egg Mixture
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk Consider using low-fat milk.
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
For Serving
  • Powdered sugar For serving
  • Jam Optional for serving

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange half of the bread slices in a single layer in the bottom of the prepared dish.
  3. Layer the ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese over the bread.
  4. Top with the remaining slices of bread.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread layers, ensuring everything is soaked.
  7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight for the best results.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
  2. Remove from the oven, allow to cool slightly, then serve warm dusted with powdered sugar and accompanied by jam.
  3. If the edges brown too quickly, cover the casserole with foil halfway through baking.

Notes

This casserole is delightful when served fresh. Pair it with fresh fruit or a light salad. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days or freeze for up to two months, reheating gently. Feel free to add herbs for extra flavor.
